Earlier this year, along with some lovely friends, I attended an Avatar: The Last Airbender concert (the perfect Nickelodeon animated series kind, not the others). My friend Melissa and I booked the tickets months ago and have been so excited, always talking about what we’d wear and predicting what the concert would entail. The official description of the event is “Avatar: The Last Airbender In Concert presents a live orchestral rendition of the series’ iconic soundtrack, paired with a two-hour special recap of the animated series’ three seasons displayed on a full-size cinema screen“. And that my friend is accurate! However what it doesn’t describe is how unbelievably amazing it is.

My love and passion for Avatar: The Last Airbender goes back a long way. When I was in year 10 (2010), I watched all of season 3 with a friend of mine on the school bus, on his good old iPod touch. From his stop to school it was 25 minutes, which was perfect for us as that is how long the episodes are. I became an instant fan. So shout out to you Jesse! Then a few years later, in my first year of university (in 2013), I had a week of awful influenza and was bed-bound for a week. During this time, my housemate suggested watching all three seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender. I’m not normally someone who binge watches shows, but I binge watched it, and just fell in love with the series again. The animation, the storyline, character development and character arcs, deep and serious moments balanced with fantastic humour, the quotes and life lessons, and the music. I have been hooked ever since. Without a doubt, it’s my favourite show of all time.

Attending the concert was so fun. Being in a room with thousands of others who clearly love the show as well, enjoying the music…it was a wholesome experience. Some songs had me in tears (Tales of Ba Sing Se, Iroh’s Tale…need I say more), others had me just purely mesmerised (the finale of Aang vs. Ozai was insane, the violins in that score are wild), and the encore of the whole room singing “Secret Tunnel” over and over was the cherry on top.

The arrival back home at 1:30am was totally worth it. Loved this whole experience, I highly recommend.
