ANZAC Day

A special day on the calendar here in Australia is April 25, ANZAC Day. A day to pay our respects and remember the incredibly brave and courageous men and women who’ve served our country, and those who continue to serve us.

ANZAC, which stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, was originally formed during World War 1 in 1915 when Australian and New Zealand soldiers fought in the Gallipoli campaign side-by-side. Each year, people gather to take part in services all around Australia and the world to honour the legacy of the ANZAC people. For me personally, I have relatives who fought in both World War 1 and 2 so this is a day I choose to honour. I don’t perceive ANZAC Day as glorifying war; I see it as a day to reflect and show respect and gratitude to those who served and still serve.

ANZAC Day reminds me of the beautiful verse in the Gospel of John.

John 15:3 – There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

What a beautiful verse! ANZAC Day also reminds me of the incredible sacrifice Jesus made for all of us – laying down His life for us, His friends. The greatest love ever shown. The perfect, innocent Son of God who gave it all for us. Remembering His sacrifice doesn’t just have to happen at Easter, but all throughout the year. To live in remembrance and gratitude.

Lest we forget (it should not be forgotten).

Love, Gracie.
